Coding blocks are a fun and simple way to learn important coding concepts. Instead of writing out code in words and special characters, instruction blocks are connected into a complete program. Block coding is used for languages like Scratch and in educational sites like Code.org where coding skills are learned by creating games or solving puzzles.
The purpose of these workshops from Robotics And Beyond is to introduce students to coding languages that use words and special characters rather than blocks of code. Students will use HTML and Java along with Scratch and JavaScript along with creating Minecraft Mods. These mods cannot be used in actual Minecraft games like they are played on consoles or laptops.
Prerequisites:
Participants must currently be in grade 5 - 10 and be proficient in Scratch.
Computer Equipment Needed:
Laptops will be provided during the workshops. However, if a student can bring a laptop, then they will have all of the software needed to continue doing activities at home between and after the workshops are over.
What Will Happen in the Scratch/HTML/Java Lesson
Students will begin by creating a Hangman game in Scratch using block coding. They will then transition this project into HTML, learning to write text-based code that mirrors the logic and functions of their Scratch project. After completing the Hangman game in HTML, students will move on to Java, where they will replicate and enhance the Hangman game using Java programming concepts.
Software or Websites Needed:
Replit: An online IDE for various languages. (An IDE is just the window where you write your code for languages like Java, Python and HTML, and run your code)
Scratch: For initial program development.
What Will Happen in the JavaScript/Minecraft Lesson
Students will use JavaScript to create mods for Minecraft, they will learn how to set up the IDE (Temurin), programming a custom item and adding effects to that item. The class will begin with setting up Eclipse Temurin, followed by guidance on creating and customizing the item/mod. NOTE: the mods created by students cannot be used in actual Minecraft console or desktop or laptop computer accounts. However, if students bring their own laptop to this workshop or can add the software needed at home, then they can continue exploring this modding activity at home.
Software or Websites Needed:
Eclipse Temurin: For Java coding and Minecraft modding.
