Registration for this schedule starts on 02/20/2026 and ends on 07/26/2026
Participants must be entering grades 6 to 9.
This topic provides an excellent introduction to concepts important to video game creation using a free, open-source game engine called Godot, and a coding language very similar to Python. Students will learn how to use the basic software tools and libraries, and each build one level of their own game. Students will create their own account for Godot and be able to continue using it at home after the camp. Laptops are provided but students may bring their own computer and install the software.
This class will not teach coding fundamentals so some experience with a scripted language like Python, Java, any C-based language or Javascript, and keyboard typing ability is necessary. (see “Requirements” below).
Godot is a great tool for creating both 2D and 3D provides a great learning path to higher levels of coding in general. Unity has a very large user base and is well supported with tutorials and forums that provide great sources of information and help.
Requirements:
- A personal interest in game design and learning about game development platforms.
- The class does not have time to teach coding fundamentals. Some experience with at least one programming language is necessary to join the class, such as C# or C+, Java, Python or Java Script.
Optional but highly recommended:
- Installation of the free Godot software on a laptop computer from your home. Our staff can help with installation during the camp.
- Creation of a personal Godot account to allow projects and learning to continue at home.
