Description

Tame Your Dragon: Mastering AI as a Personal Tutor and Research Tool

Dates Feb. 8, 15, 22, March 1, 8, 15 (makeup day is 3/22)

An additional fee is required to be paid by the student separately to create a 2-month license for ChatGPT Plus ($40)which is needed to allow enough queries and quick, uninterrupted progress through the instruction period and for some weeks after.

The goal of this six-session in-person course is to empower students with AI literacy and the ability to safely use AI as a valuable tutor and research tool for exploring and deep learning in any subject. Using ChatGPT Plus, students will learn how AI tools work, how to interact with AI through precise prompts, and how to use it responsibly to explore personal interests or research projects for school. Students will learn to craft and modify prompts, personalize AI to their needs, utilize AI for research and study, and appreciate its limitations and ethical use - and just have an amazing time discovering what AI can provide when used skillfully.

Prior to the first class, students will create their ChatGPT Plus account (details to be provided) and decide on a research project of their own choosing. During the classes, students will apply the skills being learned to that subject, ending with a report package that is designed and created to their own priorities and interests. Each class builds from basic AI usage to advanced prompt techniques, with hands-on activities and simple homework to reinforce learning. The curriculum is flexible: if students already have some AI experience, introductory parts can be condensed or skipped to focus on more advanced practice as the topic study expands and deepens.

The ChatGPT Plus account is optional after the 2-month period, when the free basic version will be adequate for most students. All work done during the class is saved ad transferred to the free version. Students will also be provided with a detailed, self-guided lesson plan to use at home following the course.
